Pool excavation

Most pool builders don't run their own excavators. The hole gets sub-contracted to a crew that comes in for the dig, hands it off to the pool company, and never sees the site again. We handle…

Services  /  Pool excavation

What's included

  • Pre-dig walk with the pool builder to confirm dimensions, depth, and the over-dig clearance
  • Tennessee 811 or Georgia 811 utility locate before any digging
  • Site stake-out and grade reference marks
  • Excavation to spec — bottom slopes (deep end to shallow end), corner radii, plumbing trench
  • Spoil management — hauled off-site, used as backfill on the property, or stockpiled per your call
  • Plumbing trenches for the skimmer, returns, main drain, and equipment pad runs
  • Equipment pad excavation sized to the filter/pump/heater layout
  • Subgrade compaction of the pool bottom for vinyl-liner and fiberglass installs
  • Backfill assistance after the shell is set and inspected (coordinated with the pool builder)
  • Final grade restoration around the pool deck area

Coordinating with the pool builder

The pool dig is a 1-2 day event in a much longer pool construction schedule. The dig is on a date set by the builder, and they need the hole to match their shell or liner dimensions exactly. We get the dig plan from them — usually a PDF with bottom slopes, hopper details, and the over-dig clearance — and we measure to it.

What the builder typically provides:

  • Pool dimensions (length, width, shallow-end depth, deep-end depth)
  • Over-dig clearance (usually 12-18 inches around the perimeter for shell pools)
  • Plumbing trench locations
  • Equipment pad location
  • Required compaction spec for the bottom

What we provide:

  • The dig itself, on the date they need it
  • Spoil hauling or stockpiling
  • The trenches they need for plumbing
  • A bottom that's flat, compacted, and ready

Common pool types we excavate for

  • Vinyl-liner pools — typically rectangular or freeform with a flat bottom or a transition to a deep end. Lighter dig.
  • Fiberglass pools — pre-formed shell that needs an exact over-dig and a stable, level bedding layer of sand or stone.
  • Gunite / shotcrete pools — over-dig and rebar cage set after the dig; we excavate, they form and shoot.
  • Concrete-shell pools — formed walls and floor, often deeper and more complex.
  • Spa-only excavations — small but with the same precision requirements.

Soil and lot considerations

Pool excavation in the Greater Chattanooga area runs into the same site variables as every other dig:

  • Rock close to the surface on ridge lots — we breaker or rock-saw through, and we measure first so you don't get a surprise charge mid-job.
  • Saturated soil or high water table near creeks — sometimes requires temporary dewatering or shoring during the dig.
  • Tight access — many backyards aren't reachable by a full-size excavator. Mini-excavator and skid-steer haul-out is slower but works.
  • Tree roots and protected trees — we work around what stays.

We do a pre-dig walk that surfaces all of these before quoting.

Hauling the spoil

A 16x32 vinyl-liner pool dig produces roughly 100-150 cubic yards of spoil. That's 10-15 tandem-dump-truck loads, give or take. Options:

  • Haul it off-site to a clean-fill disposal location — adds cost but clears the property
  • Stockpile on-site for use as fill elsewhere — saves money if you have a use for it
  • Spread on the lot — works if you have a low corner that wants fill

We'll talk through what makes sense for your site before the dig.

FAQs

Common questions, straight answers.

How long does the dig take?

For a typical residential pool (16x32 or 18x36 vinyl-liner or fiberglass): 1 working day for the dig, plus haul-off time depending on the spoil volume. Larger or concrete-shell pools can take 2-3 days. Rock dramatically changes that.

Do you need a permit for pool excavation?

Yes. The pool itself needs a building permit in every jurisdiction we work, and the dig is part of that permit. The pool builder typically pulls the permit; we coordinate with them and the inspector.

What happens if you hit rock?

Hamilton County ridges hit limestone close to the surface. If we encounter rock, we work with a breaker or rock saw and bill the rock work separately at a rate we'll agree on upfront. We don't surprise you with a rock charge — we measure and call you first.

How close to the house can the pool go?

Setback rules vary by jurisdiction. Most counties in our area require 5-10 feet from a foundation, more from a property line. The pool builder coordinates setbacks with the permit. We work to whatever the approved plan says.

Will you damage the lawn getting to the backyard?

We try not to. We use track equipment that distributes weight, lay mats over delicate areas, and plan the route to minimize impact. Some yard damage is unavoidable on a tight-access job; we restore what we can after the dig.

Do you also do the pool deck pour?

Yes — once the pool is set and inspected, we can pour the surrounding concrete deck or flatwork with proper slope away from the coping, control joints, and a slip-resistant finish.

What about pool removal / fill-in?

Yes. We demo old pool shells, haul out the debris, fill and compact in lifts, and restore the area to a buildable or lawn-ready grade.
